OVERVIEW AND GENERAL GOALS
Spanish 4 is designed to be an overall review and expansion of the basic skills of Spanish.  It is intended, through an in-depth examination of grammar, to increase accuracy and consistency in reading, listening, and writing, and to develop oral proficiency.   Students read newspaper articles, literary selections and practice letter writing skills.  Spanish and/or Latin-American films may be studied in order to introduce cultural themes and to reinforce vocabulary in context.  Movies may include:  Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, El Norte, and La historia oficial. 

SPECIFIC GOALS
First Marking Period

  • Review of Accentuation and Syllabification.
  • Interrogatives and exclamations
  • Nouns and articles
  • Adjectives
  • Possessives and demonstratives.
  • Vocabulary centered around greetings, social interaction and cinema. 

Second Marking Period

  • Personal pronouns
  • The present and future indicative
  • Comparisons
  • The preterit tense compared with the imperfect tense.
  • Vocabulary dealing with travel.

Third Marking Period
Reflexive verbs,”ser” and “estar,” “haber, tener,” and “hacer
Expressions of obligation and probability
Reflexive verbs and the prepositions en and de. 
The focus of the unit is school life.  Students read selections describing the educational system in Spanish-speaking countries.

Fourth Marking Period

  • The verb “hacer” in temporal expressions
  • Compound tenses in the indicative
  • Object pronouns
  • The prepositions “a” and “con
  • The subjunctive in nominal clauses
  •  The imperative, both formal and informal. 
  • Vocabulary describing family life and the home.

ASSESSMENTS
Testing/grading in the course includes quizzes, exams, class presentations, dictations and other projects at the teacher's discretion.
